How to Crochet the `Which Way Up` Filet Square Pattern

Learn to crochet the `Which Way Up` filet granny square. This pattern is going up north west. Once you gt used to the pattern, yu can choose/ alter the pattern to go up north east. Have fun with this pattern!

Rules of 6

I have come up with 6 rules to achieve the pattern, so that you’ll be able to crochet the pattern like a normal granny square where the stitches feeds in your memory. The rules of 6 encourage you to examine the previous round to guide you through the current round.

Rule No. 1

Each corner space must have 2 double crochet, 2 chains, and another 2 double crochet consecutively.

This rule is a non-negotiable rule. It must be followed, otherwise you won’t have a square in your pattern. This rule begins at round 1.

Rule No. 2

Each group of 6 double crochet must have 2 chains in each side.

This rule begins at round 2. Using the corner double crochet stitches, you can work up to 6 double crochet on each side of the square. Round 2 will dictate how the next round align itself so it can perform the next rules.

Rule No. 3

The top of the first 2 double crochet of the group of 6 must not have stitches.

This rule begins at round 3, where you will use the group of 6 double crochet from previous round as your point of reference. How are you going to do that? Of course you need to maintain your stitch counts to keep your square square, so the solution here is to compensate with 2 chains.

Rule No. 4

The first stitch of the next group of 6 double crochet must start on the third stitch of the group of 6 from previous round.

This rule begins at round 3, immediately after Rule no. 3. By remembering this rule, you can continue on crocheting your next 6 double crochet stitches.

Rule No. 5

The last 2 stitches of the current group of 6 double crochet always block the gaps (chain 2 spaces) from previous round.

This rule actually begins at Round 3 but the Rule No. 1 is achieving this on this round. But it will be more visible from Round 4.

Rule No. 6

The gaps created throughout the rounds must be directly parallel to the gaps created by the left corner stitches.

You will notice that this pattern won’t happen without each rule being followed.

Let’s get started

Stitch Challenge

These are the basic crochet skills needed to be able to crochet the pattern.

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet

Stitch Standards

I am using the US/International Standard Crochet Terms

Foundation Chains

Start with a slip knot, and then chain 4. Slip stitch into the first chain made to make a ring.

Round 1

Chain 5. This count as 1 double crochet and a chain 2. [2 double crochet, chain 2] into the ring 3 times. 1 double crochet and then slip stitch on both 2 loops of the third chain at the beginning of the round. [Rule no. 1 begins]

Round 2

Corner Space:

Slip stitch into the next chain space. Chain 3. This count as 1 double crochet. 1 double crochet in the same chain space. Chain 2. 2 double crochet into the same chain space. [Rule no. 1]

Side Stitches:

* 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. [2 double crochet, 2 chains, 2 double crochet] consecutively in the next chain space.* Repeat * 2 more times. 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Slip stitch on both 2 loops of the third chain at the beginning of the round, doing so will make the chains look more of a double crochet stitch. [Rule no. 2 begins]

Round 3

Note: It would be easier to continue with the next round forward if you always start the round in the chain space. But you can also start the round at the stitch where you finish the round. By doing this the end of the round will be offset. The last filet stitch then will stop the offsetting and the round will always start on the third stitch of the last group of 6 double crochet of the previous round.
I will continue on starting at the corner space at all times, for me to easily write the pattern instructions.

Corner Space:

Slip stitch into each of the next stitch until you reach the chain space. Chain 3. This count as 1 double crochet. 1 double crochet in the same chain space. Chain 2. 2 double crochet into the same chain space. [Rule no. 1]

Side Stitches:

* chain 2. Skip the next 2 stitches. [Rule no. 3 begins]
1 double crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, this may include the first 2 stitches of the corner space. Complete the corner space to only have [2 double crochet, 2 chains, 2 double crochet]. * Repeat to complete the round. Slip stitch on both 2 loops of the third chain at the beginning of the round.

Round 4

Corner Space:

Slip stitch into each of the next stitch until you reach the chain space. Chain 3. This count as 1 double crochet. 1 double crochet in the same chain space. Chain 2. 2 double crochet into the same chain space. [Rule no. 1]

Side Stitches:

* 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. 2 double crochet into the chain 2 spaces. chain 2 [Rule no. 2, 5]
skip the next 2 double crochet, 1 double crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, this may include the first 2 stitches of the corner space. [Rule no. 4]
Complete the corner space to only have [2 double crochet, 2 chains, 2 double crochet]. * [Rule no. 1]
Repeat to complete the round. Slip stitch on both 2 loops of the third chain at the beginning of the round.
Round 3 and round 4 are essentially the round repeat, but you will need to account the number stitches as you grow your square. The rules of 6 will help you achieve that.
Note: I no longer have the blanket, I will create another one so show you pictures of the rules of 6.
Have a great day!
