How to Crochet the Single Crochet Mesh Stitch

Learn to make the beautiful single crochet mesh stitch. I would also call it a single crochet filet stitch. This stitch is ideal when you plan a plaid/tartan project, a to scape the fuzzy changing colors with too many yarn ends.

Similar to the linen/moss stitch, I would even call it a single crochet filet stitch. I am sure by saying that, you would know what this stitch is all about.
With moss/linen stitch, you would normally work a single crochet on the chain space. And a typical filet stitch, would normally use the double crochet, and work the next stitch stitch on top of the next stitch, thus create this square..ish chain space.
So why create this stitch? I think this would be an ideal stitch when you plan a plaid/tartan project. I find it too fuzzy changing colors with too many yarn ends.

Using the original moss stitch wouldn’t be ideal as the single crochet alternates each and every row.

With the mossy mesh stitch, you have got the best of both worlds. It is a moss stitch as well as a mesh/filet stitch.
So my plaid/tartan project couldn’t be much better experience. Sounds amazing, huh?
Disclaimer: I couldn’t find the right name for this stitch, I’m sure it existed. So for now I will call it the Mossy Mesh stitch. Please leave a comment if you ever know what it is.

Let’s get started

Stitch Standards

I am using the US/International Standard Crochet Terms

Foundation Chains

This stitch requires odd number of stitches + additional 1 for the base chain
Example: If you are to make 21 stitches, add another 1 chain for the base, giving you a total of 22 chains.

Row 1 (Right Side)

Skip the 1st chain (this does NOT counts as a stitch), 1 single crochet into the next chain. * Chain 1. Skip the next chain, and single crochet in the next chain. Repeat from * all the way across.
You should end your last stitch with a single crochet. If not please start again, and consider recounting your foundation chains.

Row 2 (Wrong Side)

Chain 1. (this does NOT counts as a stitch), 1 single crochet into the 1st stitch. * Chain 1. Skip the next chain space, single crochet in the next single crochet from previous row. Repeat from * all the way across.
Repeat Row 2 to continue.
