What is the treble crochet stitch?
The treble crochet stitch is a tall, open stitch that adds height and drape to crochet fabric. It is commonly used in lacy patterns, lightweight garments, and decorative designs where a softer, more fluid texture is desired.
In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn how to crochet the treble crochet stitch clearly and confidently. I’ll walk you through the stitch from start to finish, including how to keep your tension even and your stitches consistent, so you can use this versatile stitch comfortably in a wide range of crochet projects.
You will need the following:
- wool/ yarn suitable for 4mm hook
- 4mm crochet hook
- scissors
- darning needle
Step by Step Instructions
Let’s get started
Tension is very important, the yarn must be able to glide smoothly from your left hand to the working project, not too tight not too lose.
Step 1: Start off with a slipknot.
Prepare your yarn tensions on your left hand (right either whichever is your orientation).
Step 2: Chain 14.
Counting from the last loop on the hook (don’t count the loop on the hook).
Step 3: Yarn over twice.
Step 4: Insert hook into the top loop of the fifth chain.
Step 5: Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Check: Now there are 4 loops on your hook.
Step 6: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through two loops.
Check: Now there are 3 loops on your hook.
Step 7: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through two loops.
Check: Now there are 2 loops on your hook.
Step 7: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through last two loops.
You have just made your first treble crochet.
Step 8: Yarn over and insert hook into the top loop of the next chain
Repeat Steps 5 to 8 all the way across your foundation chain.
Starting off the next row
Step 9: To start the next row, chain 4.
This will count as your first treble crochet. Skip the next stitch as it belong to the turning chains.
Step 10: Yarn over twice. Insert hook into the next stitch.
Step 11: Yarn over and pull up a loop.
Check: Now there are 4 loops on your hook.
Step 12: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through two loops.
Check: Now there are 3 loops on your hook.
Step 13: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through two loops.
Check: Now there are 2 loops on your hook.
Step 14: Yarn over, and pull the yarn through last two loops.
Repeat steps 10 to 14 all the way across to finish the row.
And there you have it. You should have 9 proper treble crochet and 1 turning chain, a total of 10 stitches for each row.
